so, you're having a baby
and now you're thinking about booking newborn photos. First of all—congratulations! There is so much that goes into preparing for a new baby, and adding a newborn photography session to the list can sometimes feel like just one more thing you have to figure out.
The good news? It really doesn't have to be complicated.
Newborn photography is all about capturing those tiny details and sweet moments that you swear you'll remember forever—but somehow change almost overnight. Those little fingers, sleepy stretches, button noses, tiny toes, and the way your baby curls up in your arms are all worth remembering. My goal is to make your newborn session feel relaxed and personal while creating images that you'll want to look back on for years to come.
Let's talk about light and space!
If we're photographing in your home, natural light is your best friend! I love big windows and bright rooms because they give us that soft, airy look that works beautifully for newborn photography.
We'll also need plenty of space for equipment, props, outfits, and moving around comfortably. Your home absolutely does not need to look like a photography studio—I can work with what you've got!
Choose a few themes!
I recommend choosing around three themes or looks for your session. Sometimes less is more, but having a few different looks gives your gallery some fun variety.
For girls, I love soft pinks, flowers, and ruffle-butt outfits. For boys, soft blue, sports, and rustic themes are some of my favorites.
Want something a little more unique? Cow print, family jobs, cars, motorcycles, and other personal interests can make incredibly fun setups too!
Bring the sentimental stuff!
Have a tiny teddy bear, special rattle, favorite blanket, or adorable onesie? Bring it!
It might seem silly to someone else, but if it means something to your family, I want to photograph it. Those little details can become some of your favorite memories later.
Timing matters!!
The dream is a milk-drunk, sleepy baby. 😂 But we also need time to set everything up before that happens!
Let's communicate about baby's feeding and sleeping schedule ahead of time so we can have everything ready to go when your little one is nice and sleepy. Of course, babies don't always follow the plan—and that's okay! We'll work at their pace.
Your baby might get fussy and that's completely okay!
We're going to be waking your baby up to change poses, outfits, and setups, so there may be some fussiness along the way. We'll take breaks, soothe them, and work at their speed. If they need you, we'll let you know!
No apologies necessary. They're a baby. Babies cry.
Trust the process!
Sometimes you might not immediately see the vision behind a setup, but trust me! There's a lot that goes into creating the final image.
At the same time, don't be afraid to share your own ideas. If you have a photo you've been dreaming about, something sentimental you'd like included, or just a random creative thought—tell me! This is your baby and your story, and I want your newborn photos to feel like you.
Most importantly, don't stress about everything being perfect. Your baby is only this tiny once, and these moments go by so quickly.
