I’ve known Aiden and his family for a while now, so needless to say, I was thrilled when he reached out to ask if I’d photograph his proposal to his (then) girlfriend, Chloe.
(Spoiler alert: she said yes!)
Whenever someone asks me to photograph a proposal, there are a few key questions I always ask right away.
First, do you have a location in mind?
I’m always happy to help pick spots for my clients’ photoshoots, but proposals usually carry a bit more emotional weight, and the location is often special to the couple. Aiden told me he planned to propose at the top of the big hill at Bonnet Springs Park—right where the American flag flies. It was a perfect choice. Aiden has always been deeply connected to the military, and with his departure for basic training coming up, this spot held even more meaning.

Second, does she have any idea that you're planning to propose?
I know it might sound like a silly question, but sometimes a proposal comes completely out of left field—and that can lead to a very dramatic (and honestly, amazing) reaction. I just like to be mentally—and emotionally, haha—prepared!
And finally, the big one: "Do I need to hide, or will she be expecting me?"
When it comes to proposals, keeping the surprise intact is crucial. So, we had to decide whether Chloe would know I was coming along for photos or if I’d be hiding behind a bush until the moment he got down on one knee.
In the end, Aiden and I decided the best cover story would be to tell Chloe I was there to photograph a “graduation celebration” with their friends. I loved this plan—not just because it was believable, but because there was no realistic way for me to hide on top of that hill! The only other option would’ve been lurking on the side of the hill, waiting for my cue, then sprinting uphill to catch the moment. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Aiden, we made a good call!

As for equipment, I brought my Sony A7Sii with my trusty 85mm f/1.8 lens. Now before anyone comes at me—yes, it’s a prime lens, which meant I had to do a bit of running around to frame each shot. But let me tell you, every image had that beautiful, creamy prime lens quality that captures emotion in a way nothing else quite can. Totally worth it. I had my full gear bag with me (including my backup camera), but honestly, the 85mm was all I needed.
Aiden—thank you so much for trusting me with this milestone. Capturing this moment for you and Chloe was an absolute honor. I’m so proud of you and all the amazing things ahead. And your family is too.
Aiden and Chloe, I can’t wait to shoot your engagement session and celebrate your wedding day.
